D-I-Y (Do It Yourself) Pre-Packed Hospital Bags

If you still prefer to pack your own pregnancy hospital bag kit, that is perfectly fine too!

It is understandable as some of these pre packed labor and delivery bag can be pretty expensive.

When Should You Start Packing Your Hospital Bag?

If you are already at 28 weeks (6 months) of pregnancy, which is the beginning of your third trimester, it is the best time to start packing your bag.

By 32- 35 weeks (7-8 months) of pregnancy, you should have your hospital bag completely packed in case your baby arrives sooner than expected.

Good Tip: it’s good that you keep your hospital bag near your home’s main door or inside your car so that you can quickly grab and bring the hospital bag when the actual big day finally arrives!

But if you order yourself a pre-packed hospital bag, this will save you a lot of time, and you can have them ready even on the day of your delivery.

Avoid These Common Mistakes When You Pack For Hospital Bags!

You are going to a hospital, not a holiday trip.

I know, sometimes moms can get easily over-excited (like me!), and we can over-packed our items.

When I first got pregnant, I packed hospital bags for myself, my husband, and my firstborn. By the time we got out of the hospital, it was as though we had stayed in the hospital for over a week (an absolute nightmare to unpack!)

So take it from me and other moms who have made these mistakes, and save yourself the trouble of bringing these items that you will likely not use!

1. Using Your Daily Underwear

Nearly all moms would emphasize comfort! I know, I’m guilty of this too. But once you have successfully delivered your child, you will BLEED!

Personally, I would avoid bringing comfy daily underwear unless you don’t mind staining your comfy panties.

Alternative: You can also consider getting Frida mom’s disposable panties as it hardly looks like lumpy granny panties and looks pretty similar to skims. (at a fraction of the cost!)

Plus these panties are hassle-free, and you don’t have to bother cleaning the blood out

2. Bringing Massive Make-Up Bag

Seriously, after all those hours of pushing!

Wiping your face off a full make-up product would be the last thing on your mind after pushing a tiny human being out of you.

But if you still want to share a photo of you and your newborn with your family, you can still look fabulous by using these essential make-up items.

Alternative: Just take a few essential make-up items and bring them in a travel make-up bag

(You can also try doing this; just send the photos with a decent filter, bless modern technology!)

3. Nursing Bra & Nipple Cream

You won’t use it immediately. I know these items are good to have, but you don’t need to have them over in your hospital bags.

So, it is best to skip these and leave them in your nursery room.

4. Books / Movies

Some suggest moms bring entertainment or books to read through their labor. (Heck, I even got 2 parenting books with me, which I didn’t manage to read throughout my stay in the hospital)

As exciting as it can be, labor can be pretty painful and intensive, so it is strongly advisable that you get enough rest or sleep.

Alternative: You can bring an iPad/Android tablet! ( have both movies and books all within one device. How great is that!)

5. Towels & Maternity

Hospitals usually provide towels once you have been admitted into the hospital.

So, avoid bringing your towels, especially if you are planning to keep things minimal.

Alternative: use a travel towel that has quick-dry features.

6. Fancy Baby Clothes

Baby clothes are adorable, but realistically, it is not practical to bring these fancy clothes as most newborns are perfectly fine and will happily snuggle in their onesies.

Alternative: I highly recommend that you get a zipper onesie with a built-in mitten & socks

(It is so easy to dress my baby that even the maternity nurse asked me where I got my baby’s onesie.)

7. Mittens

It’s unnecessary to bring mittens for newborns as they are mostly sleeping and unlikely to claw you out. Though, they’re pretty adorable!

Alternative: get a zipper onesie with a built-in mitten & socks (seriously, it’s life-changing).

8. Fitting Clothes

It is not recommended to bring and wear fitting clothes right after your delivery as your body is still recovering.

Instead, bring several comfortable clothes like a baggy sweatshirt or loose dress that is comfortable for you.

9. Newborns Toys

Sleep, eat, and poop; that’s pretty much the life of a newborn for the next few days of their life.

It is okay to be excited to welcome your little bundle of joy, but honestly, you don’t necessarily need to bring a baby rattle or other newborn toys.

I suppose some moms brought it over as a prop for a photo, but hey, you do you!

Best Snacks For Pregnancy To Bring In Hospital Bags

Labor can be super long and exhausting, so it helps when you have a bag of snacks to get you through the final hurdle of your pregnancy.

I highly recommend that you bring these as these are some of the best snacks for pregnancy:

  • Nuts
  • Trail Mix
  • Granola Bar
  • Dried Dates
  • Soft Buns
  • Sandwiches
  • Sliced fruits
  • Carrot sticks
  • Oatmeals
  • Rice balls

If you are reading this and helping them pack, it’d be nice if you could pack their favorite snacks. They’d appreciate it!

FAQ

Are Pre Packed Hospital Bags Worth It?

Absolutely, 100% worth it! This will definitely save you the headache of accidentally leaving behind essential items. Plus it will certainly help keep you and your family at ease and be less stressful on the big day! I was truly grateful that I had a pre-packed hospital bag ready prior to my due date.

How Long Before You Can Pack A Hospital Bag?

It would be good if you can get your hospital bag ready between weeks 32 and 35 of your pregnancy, just in case your baby does come earlier than expected. Packing later than 37 weeks is possible but not recommended as it can be abit too last minute, but hey~ anything is possible!

How Many Outfits To Bring To Hospital For Baby?

Ideally, try to bring 2-4 outfits for your baby in the hospital bag, as you may extend your stay  in the hospital after delivery. Hence, it’s better to have an extra pair of newborn outfits (just in case). Though, some hospitals do provide newborn outfits as part of their maternity package, so give them a call to confirm 👍

How Many Hospital Bags Should I Take?

I recommend 2 hospital bags: one bag for all of mum’s essentials during labor and another bag for your little one as well as other essential items that will be helpful during your stay in the hospital such as phone charger, maternity underwear, snacks & etc. Remember, you’re staying in a hospital, not a week long vacation so go easy with the bags 🧳

What Should You Not Put In Your Hospital Bag?

Here’s 5 items that you DO NOT have to put in your hospital bag and leave at home:

1.Do not bring your entire makeup kit (just bring essentials if needed). Alternatively, just use a makeup filter if you plan to post your labor photo on social media 😜

2. Avoid bringing any valuable items such as jewelry or stacks of cash (unless you don’t mind the risk of losing it).💎

3. Let your body breathe and be comfortable, so leave those tightly fitted clothes in your wardrobe at home. Don’t worry, you’ll get to wear it back in a few months!👗

4. You do not need to bring your DSLR camera as some hospitals may have strict policies such as “no photography/video recording within hospital facility”. So check with your hospitals prior to your stay. At most, your phone’s camera may work just fine. 🤳

5. Lastly, you do not need to bring anything flammable such as candles, essential oil diffusers to keep your ward calming & relaxing, as these items can be hazardous. At most, get a battery-operated candle if you want to feel cozy in the labor 🕯

Conclusions

Conclusively, pre-packed hospital bags are great for fellow moms as they help you save time and effort.

Plus, once you’re done using these bags for your childbirth delivery, it can also be used as carry-ons for everything from diaper bag to family holidays and can even be used as your gym bag!

So if you or your sisters/close friends are expecting soon, share this article as these pre-packed hospital bags should be a great option for you to consider!
