The great thing about this place is that it also has pet-friendly facilities, making this one of the best hiking spots for families who want to hike with their pets.

7. Subang Jaya Lake Garden Loop

If youโ€™re not a fan of crowded hiking spots, then be sure to check out this classic park in Subang Jaya which is located a stoneโ€™s throw away from SS15.

Donโ€™t be fooled by this seemingly short route of 1.4 km (0.8 miles), as some of its routes has elevation. This park is no flat land, and while Iโ€™m saying it is stroller-friendly, it is also definitely more of a โ€œhikeโ€ than most of the parks listed so far.

Again, it is still a relatively easy route for the family to enjoy.

Another thing that I like about this park is that it is also nearby some of Klang Valleyโ€™s best up-and-coming eateries in and around SS15 and SS12, such as the Crocodile Farm seafood restaurant, which is located within the park for a lakeside seafood dining experience.

Why this place is an amazing spot:

  • Occasional rare animal sightings such as Otters! (Great for animal-lover kids)
  • Has wide open spaces for picnics

Best Family-Friendly Hiking In Klang Valley (Level: Intermediate)

Fasten your seatbelts (or should I say shoelaces)…

Since this is the next level up (in terms of difficulty), it goes without saying that older kids should be able to handle these upcoming trails.

Note: I don’t recommend strollers for any of the trails listed below. (especially if you want to keep your stroller long-lasting). Alternatively, you can use a carrier instead.

Letโ€™s start!

8. Kota Damansara Community Forest Park

Ah yes, Kota Damansara…The land of kids-friendly malls, golf courses, fun theme cafes, and a huge reserve park with intricate hiking trails for seasoned hikers?

Both locals and expats can attest, this 800-acre lowland dipterocarp forest is home to not just one or 2 or 3 trails but as many as 10 to choose from.

Located just half an hour from KL and 15 minutes from PJ, this place promises a convenient thrill ride that can be a fun time for the whole family.

Fun fact, this historical forest used to engulf much of Selangor! It is actually one of Malaysiaโ€™s oldest forest reserves, as it was first gazetted as far back as 1898.

I recommend 2 particular trails, namely the Denai 3 Puteri and Unity Peak (approximately 6 to 9 km) trails as those are the trails with the beautiful view at the peak overlooking the NKVE Highway in its entire glory for your Instagramming needs!

It may be a community forest reserve, but itโ€™s still a forest in the wild with elevation changes and unpredictable terrain that can make your hiking session intense at times.

What makes Kota Damansara Community Forest Park one of the best family-friendly spots?

  • The community-driven initiative, as locals work actively in the conservation and research of its wildlife
  • A historical forest
  • Unpredictable terrain with excellent views for your Instagram needs
  • Conveniently nearby PJ and KL

 What you need to know:

Location: Petaling Jaya
Distance:3 to 4 km/1.9 to 2.5 miles (one way)
Estimated Hiking Duration: 3 hours
Stroller-friendly: No
Entrance Fee: RM 2/0.42 USD  (Adults)
RM 1/0.21 USD  (Children below 18)
Opening Hours7:30 am – 3 pm Mon – Sat (Closed on Sundays)

9. Bukit Sapu Tangan

It may have a pleasant sounding name but rest assured this 6.6 km (3.3 km one way) out-and-back hiking trail in Taman Botani Negara, Shah Alam will definitely make you perspire enough to reach for a handkerchief or two! (FYI, Bukit Sapu Tangan translates to โ€œHandkerchief Hillโ€).

Jokes aside, I do stress that this trail really is a good warm-up hike, thanks to its steep incline on the way to the top

Located about 40 mins from KL, do make sure to warm up with some stretches and get those leg muscles limber and ready for the intense cardio challenge ahead.

In spite of its challenging incline, the main trail is tarred out (road trail) so it makes the experience a bit more pleasant and enjoyable with consistent terrain nestled in the natural greenery of the park.

Thereโ€™s even a watchtower when you get to the top, overlooking a serene view of Shah Alam town.

Why this place is an amazing spot:

  • Intense but enjoyable hiking experience
  • Nice greenery along the route
  • Watchtower overlooking Shah Alam town.

    What you need to know:

Location: Shah Alam
Distance:3.3 km / 2.1 miles (one way)
Estimated Hiking Duration: 2 and a half hours
Stroller-friendly: No
Entrance Fee: RM 3/0.64 USD  per entry
Opening Hours7:30 am – 4:30 pm (Closed on Mondays)

10. Bukit Gasing

A local favorite for a group challenge or family-friendly activity, this 4.3 km (2.7 miles) loop trail located in PJ is a direct and adventurous endeavor for friends or family amongst the slew of delicious and aromatic Indian flavors scattered around the area.

Located only 15 mins away from KL, and with sufficient parking, in the area outside the trail, it is definitely one of the more convenient trails on this list.

Just make sure to arrive early at the location as the place is known to pack a crowd, especially on the weekends.

As mentioned, the trail from the main entrance is essentially a loop meaning that you will end up where you started, making this trail among the more direct hiking routes on this list besides Bukit Sapu Tangan

With a cool viewpoint at the top, a suspension bridge, an abandoned house, and even the novelty of being at the border between KL and Petaling Jaya. This trail is off-the-wall and has unique sights and sounds to explore.

Thereโ€™s even a trail that leads to an Indian Temple at the top, in keeping with the Indian flavor of this place.

What I love about this place is that it’s challenging enough for a good workout, unique enough to get cool pictures, and conveniently placed in the pocket of Bukit Gasingsโ€™ finest Indian and continental restaurants for a much-needed meal after the hike.

Why this place is an amazing spot:

  • Conveniently nearby PJ and KL
  • Cool viewpoints along the way for nice snaps
  • An especially Indian vibe with the route, the area as well as the flavors nearby
  • One of the cool spots for hiking in KL

    What you need to know:

Location: Petaling Jaya
Distance:4.3 km / 2.7 miles (loop)
Estimated Hiking Duration: 2 and a half hours
Stroller-friendly: No
Entrance Fee: FREE
Opening Hours24 Hours (No specific closing time)

11. Bukit Setia Alam

Donโ€™t worry, I wonโ€™t be doing comedy anytime soon but I can assure you one thing: this trail right here is certainly not a joke.

Donโ€™t be fooled by the fact that itโ€™s a loop trail, be wary that there are 2 different loops so plan your route carefully. Itโ€™s also about a 40 mins drive from KL.

Loops can be misleading and there are known to be a few unmarked trails so observation is key here.

On the bright side of all the potential challenges, what I really love about this place is that it’s a natural wonderland within Setia Alam.

With the beautiful view atop Peak Garden, Bukit Cherakahโ€™s highest point (Bukit Sapu Tangan at no 2), the calm serenity of the community trail lake, and the clear blue skies that engulf the somewhat exposed flatlands, nature photography is definitely a must-do once youโ€™re there!

Please be mindful of the parking situation (or lack thereof). I recommend that you arrive early and try to find somewhere near Petron Setia Alam for parking and from there will be about an 800-meter (0.5 miles) walk to the starting point.

Why this place is an amazing spot:

  • Challenging, adventurous trail
  • A beautiful and natural wonderland
  • Not just insta snap worthy but also serious photographer snaps worthy

    What you need to know:

Location: Shah Alam
Distance:3.7 km / 2.3 miles (loop)
Estimated Hiking Duration: 1 and a half hours
Stroller-friendly: No
Entrance Fee: Subject to parking rate
Opening Hours24 Hours (No specific closing time)

12. Broga Hill

Located 45 mins from KL, this place is an iconic spot for hiking.

This is most of Klang Valleyโ€™s first foray into the hiking conversation in pop culture and it showsโ€ฆEven if youโ€™ve never hiked before, you’ve definitely heard of Broga Hill.!

At 400-meters above sea level, 3.2 kilometers (2 miles) back and forth with 3 different peaks, the route toward the different peaks is fairly direct, easy even! Follow the clearly marked route and youโ€™re good to go.

The muddy and slippery terrain makes for an intense ride down and a very painful slip and slide if one is not careful.

I recommend the following;

Also, a fair crowd warning is in order, as this place packs a party. What I love though about this place is a particular challenge among adventurers of Broga which is to โ€œcatch the sunriseโ€.

Depending on the weather, hikers usually get up as early as 4 or 5 am to reach the top of Broga Hill to marvel at the sunrise over the hill, which has been a huge hit on Instagram over the years.

Why this place is an amazing spot:

  • Challenging, adventurous trail
  • Relatively short route
  • โ€œCatching the sunriseโ€ can be a highly rewarding activity

    What you need to know:

Location: Semenyih
Distance:3.2 km / 2 miles (out and back)
Estimated Hiking Duration: 30 mins to 1 and a half hours
Stroller-friendly: No
Entrance Fee: RM 5/ USD 1.06 (Admission, parking is free)
Opening Hours4 am to 5 pm (Daily)

13. Bukit Kiara Hill

Bukit Kiara is yet another in the โ€œuncanny-valleyโ€ series of trails that happen to exist alongside very affluent areas ala Kota Damansara Community Forest Park.

In this case, I find myself in the pocket of Mont Kiara and TTDI, about 20 minutes from KL.

Youโ€™d be wrong if you thought this trail was as smooth as a cruising Aston Martin!

I recommend the Ayuria Kiaramas Loop, at 4.7 kilometers (2.9 miles) and approximately 1 and a half hours to complete, the distance is just half the story.

The trail is popular amongst bikers, so be careful if you hear a biker coming down your path and terrain can be shifty. There are also 3 different routes so plan your adventure carefully. Much like Bukit Gasing, the landmarks in the route are prime photography content!

Donโ€™t worry though, overall, it’s a relatively safe and fun excursion for the whole family. The best part of all is that when youโ€™re done, youโ€™re in TTDI, so you may as well tuck into the many popular cafes nearby after a tiring hike!

Why this place is an amazing spot

  • Conveniently nearby KL and Mont Kiara in TTDI
  • A dichotomy of nature and โ€œboujeeโ€ lifestyle cafes and eateries
  • Surprising wildlife (from tortoise, monkeys, etc)  to stumble upon!
  • One of the best spot for jungle trekking in KL

    What you need to know:

Location: KL
Distance:4.7 km / 2.9 miles (loop)
Estimated Hiking Duration: 1 and a half hours
Stroller-friendly: No
Entrance Fee: FREE
Opening Hours6 am to 10 pm (Daily)

14. Bukit Kembara Hill

Located just 20 mins from KL, this may be the final entry on the Intermediate level, but itโ€™s certainly not the least Intermediate. Basically, this wonโ€™t be an easy ride.

At 6.1 kilometers (3.8 miles) and approximately 2 hr 30 min to complete this trail, itโ€™s not exactly a short hike with its 458 meters elevation gain.

A feature of this hill is also that itโ€™s surrounded by a lake, which brings us to one of the most grueling aspects of this trailโ€ฆ..leeches! Crawling with them in almost every step.

I recommend the following;

However, it’s only a moderately challenging endeavor and can still be an afternoon of fun for the family.

Why this place is an amazing spot:

  • Challenging but serene and beautiful. (mostly untouched)
  • Has a nice photography spot
  • Features a beautiful mini waterfall!

     What you need to know:

Distance:6.1 km / 3.8 miles (out and back)

Best Family-Friendly Hiking In Klang Valley (Level: Advanced)

group of people hiking

Weโ€™re getting into the big leagues now with these advanced trails for hiking klang valley.

I strongly advise either experienced hikers or families with kids above 16 years of age to participate on these hiking spots in Klang Valleyโ€ฆBUTโ€ฆ

If you are already a pro-hiker who just recently had your baby (congratulations, btw!), then be sure to check out these gravity-defying hiking trails by using a strong, supportive baby-carrier that are hiking-friendly!

Letโ€™s hike UP!

15. Gunung Nuang

Located about 1 hour+ from KL, letโ€™s kick things off with Selangorโ€™s third highest peak, Gunung Nuang at 1493 meters (4898 ft) high and the first of the mountains in this list.

Stretching across a village, a river, and a camp before reaching the point at which the hike towards the peak begins, it’s no wonder some have suggested that this mountain is even more difficult to climb than Mount Kinabalu!

It is recommended to start the journey early, as overall it can take from 11 to 12 hours, depending on the walking speed and frequency of rest.

Why this place is an amazing spot:

  • Challenging route (great for advance hikers!)
  • It is one of Selangorโ€™s third highest mountain
  • Relatively easy to register and affordable parking

     What you need to know:

Location: Hulu Langat
Distance:Approximately 28 km (back and forth)
Estimated Hiking Duration: 11 to 12 hours
Stroller-friendly: No
Entrance Fee: RM 8/1.70 USD  (RM 5 registration fee & RM 3 parking fee)
Opening Hours24 Hours

16. Rawang Bypass Trail

A quaint trail for hiking kuala lumpur, located near Rawang, that has grown in popularity over the past few months especially on social media and itโ€™s easy to see why.

Located about 40 minutes from KL,  itโ€™s a unique trail in that it literally goes around and then across the Rawang-Serendah Highway!

Tackling this trail is a whole other story,, as some of the inclines are so steep, ropes are needed just to scale certain parts of the trail! The route is also not for the faint of heart or those afraid of heights, as it cuts across the side of Rawang Bypass highway (one of Malaysiaโ€™s second highest highway at 58.2 meters (190ft)

At only 3.9 kilometers (2.4 miles) an entire loop, this trail really packs a punch, considering coming down is even more intense than the way up due to its particularly slippery terrain.

Thereโ€™s more than enough parking at the designated space at the beginning of the trail.

Why this place is an amazing spot:

     What you need to know:

Location: Rawang
Distance:3.9 km/2.4 miles (back and forth)
Estimated Hiking Duration: 1 and a half hours
Stroller-friendly: No
Entrance Fee: FREE
Opening Hours24 Hours

17. Gunung Hitam

Another Hulu Langat entry on this list is 55 mins from KL, you can find parking at a designated area between Kampung Ulu Lui and Kampung Paya Lebar.

Thereโ€™s more convenient parking in the Forest Reserve area, although it is highly recommended for adventurers to use a 4-wheel drive vehicle as the terrain here is rocky, uneven, and not exactly friendly to vehicles with lower suspension!

The surprising bit about this adventure though is that it really isnโ€™t as scary as its namesake! Gunung Hitam directly translates to โ€œBlack Mountainโ€ – and no I canโ€™t guarantee a Disney villain isnโ€™t already staying there!

At about 11 to 12 km back and forth, it sits pretty average on this list in terms of distance, added to the fact that there are signboards aplenty, so youโ€™re not likely to lose your way here either.

The killer factor here that lands it on this list is the extreme incline up closer to the peak. In fact, it is about an entire kilometer of uninterrupted steep climbing! (Definitely not for the hiking novice.)

Why this place is an amazing spot:

  • Challenging 1km sharp incline
  • Plenty of signage (so easy not to get lost)
  • One of the most challenging routes for hiking klang valley

     What you need to know:

Location: Hulu Langat
Distance:11.1 km / 6.9 miles (back and forth)
Estimated Hiking Duration: 7 hours
Stroller-friendly: No
Entrance Fee: FREE
Opening Hours24 Hours

18. Lata Medang Waterfall

This waterfall hiking spot finally makes a debut on this list, though it is also not exactly a walk in the park to get to!  Or should I say walk in the mountains?

Located in Kuala Kubu Baru, about 1 and a half hours from KL, be mindful that a hiking permit is needed to be presented in advance before starting your hike.

This place is also essentially in an orang asli settlement and RM1 payment is expected upon parking. You may park at Tapak Berkelah Sungai Pertak or if thereโ€™s no space left you may go to Bukit Kutu parking.

The way up and back down is about 2 hours each and cuts across Lubuk Mercu waterfall also so you have an option to chill a bit here before resuming the walk to Lata Medang, although itโ€™s really just a 5 min trek from Lubuk Mercu.

What I love about this place is that it has beautiful cascading waterfalls and a natural river (water splashing fun)!

An intense and arduous trip up but rewarded with breathtaking sights and refreshing cold ice water hitting all the right spots in your body. Now THATโ€™s a hike!

For adventurous hikers with pets, consider this another pet-friendly spot for hiking, Klang valley as there are several wild-friendly dogs that roam nearby the route and trailhead! (Good spot for your furry members to make new friends)

Ultimately, it is one of the best trails for jungle trekking in Selangor.

Advice: Please check the weather forecast before visiting this location, as it can be dangerous during the monsoon season.

Why this place is an amazing spot:

  • A refreshing place for nice dip in nearby waterfalls
  • Luscious scenery from the landscape
  • Thereโ€™s a small bridge when crossing the river
  • Plenty of friendly dogs to hike together

     What you need to know:

Location: Kuala Kubu Bharu
Distance:10.3 km/6.4 miles (back and forth)
Estimated Hiking Duration: 4 hours
Stroller-friendly: No
Entrance Fee: RM 21/ 4.47 USD  including permit fee
Opening Hours24 Hours

19. Gunung Irau

Cameron Highlands is a place to relax and unwind, but if you have a hunger for something a bit more intense, look no further than Gunung Irau here in Mossy Forest.

Located about 3 and a half hours from KL, this adventure is best experienced with a tour group as you may need to navigate through the Mossy Forest.

Important: Do apply for a hiking permit in advance (to avoid any issues with authority)

Keeping in mind that this is an intense hike, I can’t stress enough how much a good camera is needed for this adventure. With its lush natural surroundings, walking here feels like you’re in the world of The Lord of the Rings.

Also, its goes without saying that thicker clothing may be helpful  for this hike as temperatures can drop below 20 or 22 degrees Celsius (especially during the monsoon season.)

Why this place is an amazing spot:

  • Unique landscape (Perfect for your Instagram shot!)
  • Interesting flora abound
  • Cold chilly weather

      What you need to know:

Location: Cameron Highlands
Distance:4.3 km/2.7 miles (back and forth)
Estimated Hiking Duration: 2 hours
Stroller-friendly: No
Entrance Fee: RM 10/2.13 USD  (permit fee)
Opening HoursClosed 5 pm (Daily)

20. Gunung Besar Hantu

Gunung Besar Hantu, a name on this list that already sends shivers down my spine, literally translates to “Big Ghost Mountain” or “Big Mountain Ghost,” which doesn’t do much to calm the nerves!

Gunung Besar Hantu is the tallest mountain in Negeri Sembilan at 1462 meters (4796 feet) which is relatively low, considering it is one of the top 10 highest mountains in Malaysia.

However, this place, located in Taman Negeri Kenaboi in Jelebu, Negeri Sembilan, is about 1 a half hour drive from KL.

You very quickly go through a path of slippery muddy trails, bumpy random elevations, and relentless paths of tall grass and thorny weeds. Beware of the leeches in the area, as it is moist due to its proximity to Lata Kijang waterfall

Even getting to the trailhead is a challenge on its own as it takes an experienced driver with a 4-wheel drive vehicle. For these reasons, I highly recommend booking a tour group in advance. A hiking permit can be obtained on-site at RM 5 (1.06 USD )

This is on top of the fact that there are even other activities available there such as birdwatching, caving, tubing, and other mountain trails! You may click here to find out more.

Why this place is an amazing spot:

  • Has fun activities besides hiking (i.e. caving, tubing, birdwatching & etc.)
  • It has plenty of amenities for visitors; (i.e. toilet facilities, chalet, dorm, canteen, campsite, multi-purpose hall, etc.)
  • One of the most challenging hikes near Klang Valley

     What you need to know:

Location: Jelebu
Distance:20 km/14.4 miles (back and forth)
Estimated Hiking Duration: 10 – 12 hours
Stroller-friendly: No
Entrance Fee: RM 5 (permit fees) (1.06 USD )

21. Kanching Eco Forest Park

Iโ€™ve saved the best for last with another waterfall. In fact, there are not one, not 2, but 7 levels of waterfalls

Located just 24km (15 miles) from KL, this place promises to be one of Klang Valleyโ€™s best family-friendly hiking trails where you can find yourself on a challenging route and be rewarded with water-splashing fun at the end.

Please keep in mind that this difficult trail is only for advanced hikers (which are accessible above the main waterfall), which is why it is ranked this high on this list.

The hike up after the second level becomes strenuous as the incline approaches vertical and you’re hiking alongside the waterfall, which means very slippery slopes. Luckily, there are ropes to cling to, so keep an eye on your step and wear appropriate footwear.

I assure you one thing, though, every view of the seven levels is something to behold in memory. Be sure to take a picture of at least one of the viewpoints.
