Let’s start the list with the western part of the country, Peninsular Malaysia. If you plan on going snorkeling in Kuala Lumpur, then keep reading where I share several great snorkeling spots where you can get a better snorkeling experience!
Peninsular Malaysia does have plenty of amazing snorkeling spots you can visit with your family which are not too far from Kuala Lumpur.
However, these snorkeling activities are usually available subject to good weather conditions as most of these islands will not be available during the monsoon season (usually by year-end).
1.Kapas Turtle Valley, Kapas Island (Terengganu)

Kapas Island located in Terengganu is home to several snorkeling spots, including the Kapas Turtle Valley. The snorkeling area is located southwest of the island, near a light tower overlooking the coast.
Exploring the reef is easy, as you can enter the water in front of the Kapas Turtle Valley Chalets and snorkel the surrounding area. The sandy beach makes the water entrance easy.

2.Melina Beach, Tioman Island (Pahang)

If you are feeling fancy on coral reef holidays, Tioman Island has a lot to offer.
The Melina Beach reef snorkeling spot is the house reef of Melina Beach Resort. The resort is located south of Paya Beach on the west coast of Tioman Island. The area is pretty remote compared to the other side of the island.
In order to explore this spot, visitors can either choose to stay at the Melina Beach Resort or hike through the jungle from the village of Genting, in the south, or from Paya Beach, in the north.

3.Payar Island, Langkawi Island (Kedah)

Next on the list is Payar Island which lies between the islands of Langkawi and Penang. This island is home to the Pulau Payar Marine Park which is one of the famous snorkeling spots in Langkawi.
This island is 30 km south of the main Langkawi Island, and it is about 45 minutes away from the Kuah jetty point. The island is accessible via a catamaran or a speedboat.
This island is generally inhabited. However, basic facilities like toilets and changing rooms are provided by the authorities. Most tour packages offered lunch in their packages but mommy and daddy can bring along some snacks for your little one.

If you look for Langkawi on the map, you will realize that Langkawi Island is a very big island. Aside from the mainland Langkawi Island, this island is surrounded by many small islands which is why island hopping tours are very popular among people visiting Langkawi.

5.Tioman Island (Pahang)

Tioman Island is the biggest island in Pahang. It is located about 56 km off the coast of Pahang. The island is famous for snorkeling and diving as the underwater view on this island is to die for! The island is also well-developed and boasts several resorts as accommodations for visitors.
The island is easily accessible via ferries. There are three daily ferries to Tioman Island. The ferries’ schedule is affected by tides or storms so ensure you can the weather forecast for the day to avoid disappointments.

If you want to go somewhere near Kuala Lumpur, head over to Pulau Pangkor, an island located off the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. This island is just a 2 hour journey from Ipoh, the state’s capital of Perak with a 20 minutes ferry ride.
Pangkor Island is an island heavily promoted by the government, which is the reason why this island is a duty-free island.
The island is famous for its attractive beaches. The Pasir Bogak beach on Pangkor Island is ideal for snorkeling as its waters are shallows and have many extensive reefs.

Then come for a snorkel with your kids at Shark Point, located on Perhentian Island. This area is called Shark Point as it is home to blacktip sharks that are often seen around the drop-off. The area is easily accessible as you can reach them by swimming from the beach if you are confident.

8.Rawa Island (Johor)
Pulau Rawa is a small, private island located in Mersing, Johor. This island is accessible via a 20-minute boat ride from the mainland. It is a coral island and famous for an abundance of white doves, which is where the island got its name as Rawa means white doves in the local language.
Here’s an interesting fact: this island belongs to the Sultan of Johor. (one of the Malaysian royal members!)
The Sultan himself and his family often come to the island for a holiday. Since it is a private island, the island was carefully developed to preserve the beauty of its nature. There are no proper roads on the island, only several walkways are built.
The scenery on the island is breathtaking with clear blue water and white sandy beach. One side of the island is a beach while the other side has a rocky vertical cliff. The island is generally unspoiled which is the reason why it has one of the clearest water quality in Malaysia.
This island is perfect for snorkeling and diving. If you think Langkawi coral island is spectacular, wait until you see the corals at Pulau Rawa as the beauty will blow your mind. This island is also part of the Sultan Iskandar Marine Park, which is why marine life is so diverse here.

If you are feeling adventurous, why not visit Pulau Mataking Kecil, a stunning island situated in Semporna Sabah, making it one of the best snorkeling Borneo destinations?
The coral reef at this spot fringes the thin stretch of sand linking the islands of Mataking and Mataking Kecil.

Timba-timba Island located in Semporna, Sabah is famous for its long white sand beach and photogenic landscape, making every part of the island Instagram-worthy. When I say long sandy beach, I mean it. It’s very long (about 1 km long).
Although the beach is long, the island is relatively small. Though, it doesn’t matter as running along the beach with your kids is the perfect family bonding activity.
Aside from its sandy beach, the island is popular as a snorkeling spot. The island is very near Tun Sakaran Marine Park, making its waters the home to a variety of aquatic wildlife.

Selingan Island is famous for being one of the 3 islands that form Turtle Island National Park in Sandakan, Sabah. All three islands of Selingan, Bakungan Kecil, and Gulisan form a huge protected area for turtle conservation.
However, among all three islands, visitors are only allowed to experience turtle conservation activity at Selingan Island. The conservation center is under the management of Sabah Parks, so any visitor planning to come is required to obtain permission before coming.
Obtaining permits to enter this island is fairly easy. All you have to do is contact the only accommodation operator on the island, Crystal Quest Sdn. Bhd. and they will do everything for you if you book their packages – including the permits!

Fret not, Just like Sabah, Sarawak is more known as heaven for divers. In Sarawak, you can go diving and see shipwrecks from World War II. However, it requires you to go deeper into the water.
But, no worries. Although there are not many snorkeling options in Sarawak, you can still go there for a snorkel with your little one.
One of them is Satangs Island.
Satangs Island is located in Santubong, Kuching, Sarawak. It consists of two islands namely Satang Besar Island and Satang Kecil Island. Both of them are part of the Talang-Satang National Park, Sarawak’s first marine protected area for turtles’ conservation.
The islands are the nesting ground where Green Turtles and the rare Hawksbill Turtles lay their eggs. The island’s main purpose is turtle conservation. However, the island also encourages nature tourism.
Visitor’s visit to the island is restricted which is why visitors are only allowed to visit the island for day trips. Moreover, land and water activities on this island are also restricted to only designated areas. Visitors can visit the turtle hatchery, where visitors can learn all about the conservation program.
The Talang-Satang’s coral reefs are home to a number of venomous creatures such as Sea Snakes, Coral Snakes, Stonefish, and Cone Shells. If you bring your children along during the trip to this island, ensure you keep your eye on your kids to prevent accidents.

Another island that makes up the Talang-Satang National Park is Talang-Talangs Island located in Sematan, Kuching, Sarawak. Thus, it makes up an area of 19,414 hectares of the national park (how big is that? 😯). Taland-Talangs Island is composed of two islands, Talang-Talang Besar Island and Talang-Talang Kecil Island.
Just like Satangs Island, Talang-Talangs Island is gazetted as a protected area in an effort to enhance turtle conservation in Sarawak. However, visitors are still encouraged to come to the island.
Since the islands are protected, the island is not well developed. However, you can still find some basic facilities here which is also one of the reasons why visitors are only allowed to come here for day trips.
If you decide to come here with your children, ensure that you are well prepared, especially in terms of food.
Similar to Satangs Island, Talang-Talangs Island also has shallow coral reefs. Its coral reefs are also home to venomous creatures such as Sea Snakes and Coral Snakes. So beware and pay extra attention to your mini me.

Snorkeling with kids can be a fun and rewarding experience during a family holiday.
So, it’s important to plan ahead and take precautions to keep everyone safe. Bad memories are not fun so check out these tips if you plan to bring your kids snorkeling.
Preparing For Snorkeling With Your Children
It is always easier to have kids that are already comfortable in the water for snorkeling. In general, children around age 5 years old are appropriate for snorkeling as they are able to listen to any safety instructions during snorkeling sessions.
So how do you know if your kids are actually ready for snorkeling? well, here are some helpful tips on how you can prepare them:
Choosing the right gear for your kids is crucial as it helps keep your child safe in the water.
- Tip 1: Opt for a Traditional snorkel as it is better compared to a full face mask as a full face mask can lead to breathing difficulties when not used correctly.
- Tip 2: Get DRY children-sized snorkels as they are designed to fit their little mouth as they are shorter with smaller mouthpieces and help block water from entering the snorkel.
